Exoikonomo 2020 programme

The "Exoikonomo kat' Oikon 2020" programme – or, under its new name, "Exoikonomo – Aftonomo" – is an excellent way to upgrade the energy performance of your home and save energy and money, with subsidies of up to 85%.

The key thing about this year's programme is that it allows the majority of households to take part. Indeed, the income criteria for joining and receiving the subsidy cover family incomes of up to €120,000 per year.

Key information

The Exoikonomo kat' Oikon 2020 programme has a budget of €850 million. It starts on 2 November 2020 and will roll out on different dates depending on your region.

What sets this year's programme apart is its more favourable income criteria, which allow more than 50,000 citizens to join the programme to save energy and improve the energy performance of their homes.

Subsidies will be paid directly to each applicant through low-interest and zero-interest loans, accompanied by tax relief. As part of a wider National Energy Plan, the Ministry of Environment and Energy aims to upgrade the energy performance of 60,000 households a year for the next ten years.

In fact, the ambition of the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostis Hatzidakis, is to multiply the funds available – not only EU programmes but also consumer-friendly loans and tax relief and incentives from the Ministry of Finance.

Depending on the region where your home is located, the start date for applications will differ as follows:

Eligibility requirements

For a home to join the Exoikonomo kat' Oikon 2020 programme, it must meet the following criteria:

1. It must be a permanent, main residence
2. It must have a building permit
3. Its Energy Performance Certificate must rate it as class D or lower
4. It must not have been declared for demolition

For apartment buildings, 50% of the apartments must be used as homes and, following a decision by the owners' meeting, a representative submits the application to join Exoikonomo 2020.

The maximum budget for a home is €50,000 per owner's tax number. However, if an owner has more than one property eligible for the programme, the budget can reach €100,000.

In other words, an owner can enter more than one property in Exoikonomo – Aftonomo.

Which works are covered

The programme covers a wide range of works and upgrades. In particular, it includes all of the following:

• Upgrading the heating and cooling system
• Replacing window frames
• Installing a thermal insulation system and a solar water heater.
• Installing shading systems
• Photovoltaic installations and net-metering
• Smart-home features such as smart lighting, monitoring and remote-control systems, etc.
