Home interior design

Home & Commercial Interior Design

Renovating and decorating a space is the art and science of making it more attractive and more functional. The term usually refers to the interior design and layout of your space.

Home decoration is essentially about effectively balancing different elements.

The key elements of home decoration include:

  • Colour
  • Lines
  • Forms
  • Pattern
  • Light
  • Space

Colour

Colour is more than an aesthetic choice. It can also affect the whole mood and feel of a space. For example, most people think of red as a "passionate" or "intense" colour, while blues and greens are usually considered "calm" or "soothing". Likewise, yellow is often associated with words like "cheerful" and "optimistic". When choosing a colour scheme for your room as part of a renovation, think not only about your visual preferences but also about the kind of energy or attitude you want to cultivate.

Lines

Think of lines as the perimeter around a form or shape.
Lines can be "vertical" (up and down), "horizontal" (side to side) or "dynamic" (lines that express movement, such as zigzags or curves). In general, horizontal lines create a sense of security, while vertical lines are expressive and bold. Dynamic lines, which follow their own set of rules, can add a fun, exciting touch to any space when used appropriately.

Forms

"Form" is simply another word for "shape", describing the outline of any artwork, piece of furniture or other three-dimensional object you can imagine. Furniture, sculpture and even rooms themselves can take two types of form: organic forms (natural and irregular, with curves or abstract shapes) and geometric forms (with sharp, man-made lines and edges, such as squares or triangles).

Pattern

A pattern is the deliberate repetition of lines, forms or other design elements. Patterns usually appear on wallpaper or fabrics, but they can appear anywhere in the home, even through the use of light or other design elements. While patterns can add life and movement to a space, overusing them can be tiring or create a sense of "chaos", so proceed with care when choosing a pattern.

Light

Have you ever seen a photo taken in bad lighting? Then you already know how strongly light affects our perception. Good lighting is an integral part of any space, whether natural, artificial or a combination of the two.

Space

Last but not least, space is at the heart of almost every decision in home design, decoration and renovation. There are two main types of space to consider: two-dimensional space (the length and width of a room) and three-dimensional space (which also includes height). For example, when choosing a rug you only care about two-dimensional space, whereas when fitting shelves all three dimensions matter. It is also important to leave enough empty or "negative" space so you can live and move around the room easily.
